Research

I am a postdoctoral fellow (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter) in the algebraic geometry group at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. My research focuses on computational and combinatorial aspects of algebraic geometry, especially involving moduli spaces of stable pointed rational curves and related varieties. My work involves methods from birational geometry, as well as toric geometry, optimization, and polytope theory. Recently I have been working on applications to machine learning, and will be leading a reading course on S. Watanabe's book Algebraic Geometry and Singular Learning Theory in the Summer Semester, 2012. Please see the Publications/Computation page for more information.

Some not-strictly mathematical interests of mine include history of science (especially historical assessments of what is and is not considered scientific reasoning, e.g. my master's thesis) and philosophy of mathematics. For an essay I wrote about Hollywood portrayals of mathematics for a UT Austin graduate student contest, click here.
